Psychedelic Threads
by Kathia Bailey
Hand-tufted fiber art with a dedication to sustainability.
Born into a family line of artists, I’d like to believe that a part of it was inherited through DNA. My creative youth although vibrant, lacked conventional roots; instead, I ventured down numerous artistic paths, constantly exploring. One day I was immersed in photography, and the next I found myself enrolled in culinary school.
Somehow one of those paths led to modeling in New York City, where I quickly became aware of just how wasteful and unsustainable the fashion industry truly was. This realization sparked a need to explore the possibilities of repurposing thrifted and vintage clothing which ultimately led to the creation of my brand, Psychedelic Threads.
I genuinely enjoy making unique clothes, but I continued to struggle with my commitment to a single art form. Years later, I stumbled across “my thing”. I discovered the layered, tedious, oh so creative and rewarding process of tufting. I incorporate the same values today by using a variety of recycled materials, including fabric scraps. Fiber art has provided me with a powerful means of self-expression and the most rewarding part is seeing my pieces find a home in the lives of others.
I’m a mom to the coolest twins and wife to my muse. I love taking on custom orders, making pet rugs, melting clocks, and yarn nipples.
